Aberdeen falls

The beautiful Aberdeen falls reside in Kehelgamuwa mountain range in Ginigathena area, Nuwara Eliya district and stands at a height of 98 meters, being the 18th highest in Sri Lanka.

About the destination

Kehelgamuwa river that later joins Maskeli river is the source of this beautiful waterfall. The fall has been named after “Aberdeen”, is the third-largest city in Scotlandm which is also the capital of Aberdeenshire.

The story woven around this beautiful waterfall is, there is a tunnel starting from Aberdeen Falls to Laxapana Falls and the tunnel opening is at Puna River. After building the Norton Bridge Dam under the Laxapana project, there was a decrease in the water level in Aberdeen falls. But it is still a wonderful sight even with lesser water unless it is a severe drought. The base pool of the waterfall seems shallow from outside and travelers usually tend to walk to the middle, not knowing there is a muddy layer of quicksand near the base. One should be very careful, as it is dangerous to swim to the middle of the waterfall, as it has recorded many deaths over the years.  Reaching this waterfall is quite a trek, as you need to walk about 1.2kms after you park your vehicle.
