Description

About Bana Samanala:

Bana Samanala is a mountain located closer to Adam’s Peak/ Sri Pada in Ratnapura district, Sabaragamuva province of Sri Lanka. British called it twin peaks or false peaks due to its similar appearance from the top of Sri Pada. There are two peaks appearing from the grounds, and the locals name the tallest one as Bana Samanala (approx. 2,010 meters) and the other one as Darmaraja-gala. Bana Samanala is the second highest peak in the Samanala mountain range. However, this peak is not very popular and least explored.

How to reach the Bana Samanala:

Anyone climbing to Sri Pada could also choose to descend to Seetha Gangula (Rathnapura), where the Bana Samonala hike starts.

The mountain can be reached via –

Colombo -> Hatton -> Nallathanniya -> Sri Pada -> Seetha Gangula at Rathnapura road -> Bana Samanala

Best time to visit Bana Samanala and Weather conditions:

January to March is ideal for hiking when the weather is probably good with less water in Seetha Gangula.

Hike to Bana Samanala:

Hiking to Bana Samanala is challenging as there is no proper path to the peak, and you will be literally walking through mountainous forests, Nelu bushes, bamboo, and other thorny bushes. A Buddhist flag marks the highest point of the mountain. Although it may not be the best place for camping, there is a flat rock space closer to the highest point, where you can put up a single tent. The summit has multiple viewpoints that you could enjoy.
