Batathota Lena Cave Temple is situated in Rathnapura in Sri Lanka. It had been neglected in dense forests but it is famous as one of the religious sites. This place is most famous among the Buddhists in Sri Lanka.

Batathota Lena Cave Temple is situated in a forest and it is visited by thousands of pilgrims per day. It is located in Kuruwita which is a tiny village in the Rathnapura district. To climb the Batathota Lena Cave Temple is a beautifully carved stone step in which devotees have to climb to reach the foot of the mountain.

History of Batathota Lena Cave Temple

Batathota Lena Cave Temple is stated to have been built by King Nissankamalla in the Polonnaruwa reign in which the King had accidentally discovered the temple. This is also venerated for “Diwaguhawa” which means this is the place where Lord Buddha spent the rest of the day with his 500 disciples on his return from Sri Pada.

Go on McCallum Road and turn right onto Kynsey Road. Turn left Dudley Senanayake Mawatha and turn right onto Athurugiriya Road.  Turn left onto Avissawella Road and turn left onto  Kuruwita Erathna Road then turn right onto Paragala Road to reach your destination.

From Ratnapura

Go on Colombo-Batticaloa highway and turn right onto  Kuruwita Erathna Road to reach your destination.
