Batticaloa Fort

Batticaloa Fort is a stunning fort which is situated in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka. It was built by the Portuguese back in 1628. It was somehow captured by the Dutch in 1638. But from 1745 onwards it was used by the British for their military purposes.

About the destination

Batticaloa Fort consists of four bastions of which two sides are protected by the Batticaloa lagoon and the other two sides are guarded by a canal. The structure is made out of granite stones and corals. It is controlled and maintained by the government of Sri Lanka.

Current situation of the Batticaloa Fort

The Batticaloa Fort is still in good condition and there are many houses and many other administrative departments of Sri Lanka still functioning which are located in the old structure.

History of the Batticaloa Fort

Batticaloa Fort was originally built by the Portuguese back in 1628. During that time the Dutch fleet landed in Kandy to visit the King of Kandy. This action angered the Portuguese who built the fort for protection against the Dutch. Then the Batticaloa Fort was captured by the Dutch when the then King of Kandy sought help from Dutch to drive out the Portuguese. As time passed by, it was captured by the British. It is stated that the Batticaloa Fort is one of the most stunning forts built in Sri Lanka.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Go on McCallum Road and T. B. Jayah Mawatha to Maradana Road. Take Colombo – Katunayake Expressway. Take Veyangoda Road, Ekala – Kotadeniyawa road to Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway.

Then follow Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway. Take Elahera – Giritale Road and Trincomalee Highway to Bazaar Street in Batticaloa.

Then continue on Bazaar Street and take Braiyan Dr to Fort Road to reach your destination.

From Batticaloa

You have to head south toward Trincomalee Highway. Follow Trincomalee Highway to Bazaar Street and continue on Bazaar Street. Then take the Braiyan Dr to Fort Road to reach your destination.
