Batticaloa Lighthouse is also known as the Muttuwaran Lighthouse. It was built in 1913 by the British. The lighthouse is 28 meters in height and has a set of stairways that allows its visitors to climb to its very top where they can get mesmerizing views of the surroundings.
About the Batticaloa Lighthouse
Batticaloa Lighthouse is located 5 km away from the city of Batticaloa. It is situated in the place where the lagoon meets the Indian ocean. It is one of the major landmarks of the British colonial era. This was built to guide many sailors coming from all over the world. This place is now a park for many families and couples to relax and spend the day.
The tower has 5 windows, a gallery, and lantern more specifically it is painted in white to show off its majestic look.
History of Batticaloa Lighthouse
Batticaloa Lighthouse was built in 1913 by the British but was later neglected due to the LTTE activities. In 2003 Sri Lanka was hit by a destructive tsunami that damaged the lighthouse only to a very small extent. After all the funds received from foreign nations the Sri Lankan government was successful in gifting back the lighthouse the glamour it once had while rising itself 28 meters up to the sky above.

From Colombo
Go on McCallum Road and T. B. Jayah Mawatha to Maradana Road. Take Colombo – Katunayake Expressway.
Take Veyangoda Road, Ekala – Kotadeniyawa road to Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway. Then follow Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway.
TakeElahera – Giritale Road. Go on Trincomalee Highway to New Boundary Road in Batticaloa. Continue on New Boundary Road and drive to Bar Road to reach your destination.
From Batticaloa
Head south toward Trincomalee Highway. Turn left at Yamaha Plaza onto Trincomalee Highway.
Turn left at Urani Jct onto New Boundary Road. Turn left at Vinayagar cafe onto Bar Road and turn right at Breeze Villa onto Bar Road to reach your destination.
