Bomburu Ella falls (also known as Perawella falls) is the widest waterfall in Sri Lanka. It is 50 meters high and is situated in Sita Eliya Kandapola forest reserve. This beauty belongs to both Nuwara Eliya and Badulla districts. Some consider this beauty as the most beautiful waterfall in Sri Lanka, making this a must-visit destination for every traveller.
About the destination
The road is in a good condition up to the village where you need to start the hike to reach the waterfall. The walk to the waterfall base requires a bit of a hike and climb, but the breathtaking views and the cool weather prevents you from feeling any tiredness at all. The trek will be 2-3kms through the forest. At the start, you must walk along an irrigation channel that brings water to the paddy fields from Bomburu Ella. You will also meet small cascades along the way to meet their eldest sibling. Once you reach the top, the waterfall is magnificent. You can rest, have a picnic and take a bath if you wish. Camping at this location is prohibited by the relevant government authorities of Sri Lanka. There is enough parking space at the starting point of your hike. The water of Bomburu Ella has been diverted to a powerhouse in that area and for cultivation purposes.
Reaching the destination
From Colombo
Take Colombo – Thalawakele route (A7) and take a right at the Blackpool junction to Blackpool – Magasthota road (B512). Turn right to Peradeniya-Badulla- Chenkalady highway (A5) and travel up to Galahagama junction. Turn left to Rendapola – Galahagama – Ambagasdowa road and travel 4.3kms. Turn left at the bend to Bomburuella road.
From Kandy
Come to Peradeniya and take Peradeniya-Badulla- Chenkalady highway (A5) and reach Hakala, passing Nuwara Eliya. From Galahagama junction, take the above directions.
