Description

Calido beach is also located in the close proximity of the Kalutara Bodhiya. It is the stretch beach between the bay and the Kalu River. It is known as one of the main tourist attractions in the Kalutara, due to its tidy waves and broad natural walk, dull gold sandy beach and the smooth curl of the wave leaving behind subtle white foam in the shore of the sea.

How to get there

Arriving from the town, you have to cross the long bridge and turn left to the road which is named surprisingly as “Calido beach road” [ Google Maps Directions from town ]. Go along the road straight until you reach the beach area.

The beach is quite rough especially in monsoon months (May- July) and not suitable for bathing although you’d see locals enjoying the waves. The beach can be crowded during weekends and holidays so walk towards the north to if you want to feel some tranquility. In the early mornings, fishermen can be observed arriving from the sea and pulling those large nets from the sea like a tug-of-war game.

Tips to Visit

The best time to visit the Calido Beach is during the evening hours when the busy urban setting has calmed down as the day ends, where the evening street vendors steps in with local short snacks; such as ulundu wadei, cassava chips, boiled chickpeas… etc, where you could enjoy the sunset whilst enjoying these local knickknacks.

Throughout this stretch of beach, you could find many tourists inns, which offers a variety of Sri Lankan food. Having the opportunity to taste the Sri Lankan Cuisine with such a stunning view is an opportunity best missed. Some of these hotels or inns offer calypso music, a genre of music inherited by the Sri Lankans during the Portuguese administration.

It’s so splendid to walk in the beach along evenings; one of the most attractive sightings could get accustomed such as fishermen returning from the sea after staying long days in the sea. These sightings are very rare occasions and cannot be experienced daily.

Furthermore, the sunset in the beach coloring the sky in the shades of reds and purples, the stars beaming through as the sunsets, is undoubtedly one of the best sceneries in the Calido Beach. If you ever think this exotic beach is hard to reach think again to come to see the beach and you will have a pleasant day enjoying with picnics or going to local traditional restaurants to have a sweet traditional lunch along the beach.
