Demodara Railway Station is situated in the Badulla district in Sri Lanka. Both the Demodara Railway and tunnel is referred to as the Demodara loop. This rail line travels around a spiral loop and comes out a tunnel which is located precisely underneath the Demodara train station.
Demodara Railway Station is the only spiral loop in the world. It is the third last station on the mainline. Both the Udarata Menike and Podi Menike express trains stop at this station. It is 912.5 meters above sea level. It is considered an engineering marvel that was constructed during colonial times in the country.
Demodara Railway Station is famous for its unique Demodara loop. The rail line passes under itself and then goes around the loop which finally goes beneath the Demodara Railway Station. The rail loop is about 900 meters long and the tunnel is 320 meters in length. Folklore states that the idea came by observing a supervisor in a tea estate unfasten and retie his turban.
