Ellewala Ella is a waterfall that became quite popular after details about it were published on social media. This Waterfall is situated in the Monaragala district in Sri Lanka. It is quite stunning but a rather small waterfall with a height of about 4 meters and it lies hidden inside the jungle about 5 km from Wellawaya town.

About the destination

Ellewala Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall that soothes the eye and mind. Alikote Area is the water source of this beautiful waterfall and on your way to see the waterfall, you will come across Alikote Ara reservoir as well. Though it is assured that you will enjoy the journey and have a mesmerizing experience like no other.

You can have a bath at the base of the waterfall. Youngsters who come to this place do not forget to spend their night in here to enjoy the view and to get the maximum out of it. An important thing to keep in mind when you visit here is to take back all the plastics you bring along without dumping them in the area. When you travel along with Ella – Wellawaya Road, take a left to Wewelkandura  – Kosgahawela road, which is in front of Rathmal Vehera Ancient Temple, where Iran and Sri Lanka friendship Pillars are also placed. After traveling about a few hundred meters, take a left in the ‘Y’ junction and travel along Ellewala waterfall road. For the last few kilometers, you need a proper 4WD or a trishaw. After parking, you need to walk a little further into the jungle as well. The water of this waterfall was once polluted with dust and cement particles from Uma Oya project, bring the fall a deep white color. Now the fall doesn’t have polluted water and again a safe place for travelers.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Take the Southern Expressway or Colombo – Batticaloa highway (A4) and reach Wellawaya town. Take a left and travel along Ella – Wellawaya Road.

From Kandy

Take Haragama Road (B492) passing Victoria, Randenigala, and Rantembe reservoirs and reach Loggal Oya junction. Take a right and travel along Mahiyanganaya Road to Badulla. Take A5 to Kali Ela and then take a left and travel along Badulla road. Turn left to Ella – Halpe road and take another left to travel along Ella – Wellawaya road.
