Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick is situated in Trincomalee. It is a fort that was built by the Portuguese in the Eastern Province back in the past. It is built on Swami Rock-Konamamalai from the debris of the world famous Koneshweram temple which is a temple of thousand pillars.

About Fort Frederick

Fort Frederick is built on the debris of the Koneshwaram temple which was destroyed by the Portuguese colonial Constantino de Sa who was under Philip III. This was first built by the Portuguese and it was later rebuilt by the Dutch. This fortress is used by the Sri Lankan milary today but you can visit and explore most of it without any issue.

History of the destination

There are assorted cannons and artillery as well as there used to be some spotted deers around the area. A new village was also built in the Konomalai cape and it contained both Portuguese and Tamil people. There were 50 Portuguese soldiers inside the fort and a church was established in the name of “Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe”.

This whole structure was rebuilt by the Dutch and the name Fort Frederick was given.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

You have to go on McCallum Road and take the Colombo – Katunayake Expressway. Take the Outer-Circular exit  and turn right onto Colombo-Kandy Road.

Turn left onto Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway. Then continue on Kachchery Road and turn left onto Fort Fredrick Road to reach your destination.

From Trincomalee

Go on Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway, Ambepussa – Trincomalee Highway, Kandy Road to Kachchery Rd. Then you have to continue on Kachchery Road to your destination.
