Gal Oya Valley National Park

Gal Oya Valley National Park is situated in Monaragala in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1954. The main purpose of building it is to serve as the main catchment area for Senanayake Samudraya which is the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka.

About the destination

Gal Oya Valley National Park has an elevation that is from 30 meters to 900 meters. It has an annual rainfall of 1700 millimeters. A significant feature is the elephant herd that can be witnessed all around the year. The mountains of the park are named as Ulpotha, Danigala, and Nilgala. There are four reserves and they add up to 63,000 hectares of land.

Ecosystem and wildlife of the destination

The ecosystem of Gal Oya Valley National Park has three types such as grassland, forest, and shrub. There are 32 terrestrial mammals such as the water buffalo, Sri Lankan leopard, Sri Lankan elephant and so many more. There are about 150 species of birds such as the Grey Heron, White-Bellied sea eagle, lesser whistling duck, and a variety of more stunning birds. Gal Oya Valley National Park also consists of reptiles such as the star tortoise and mugger crocodile.

How to reach your destination

From Colombo

There is no direct connection from Colombo to Gal Oya National Park though you can take the bus to Kandy Good Shed Bus Station then take the travel to Gal Oya National Park. Or else you can take the bus to Badulla Main Bus Station then go to Gal Oya National Park.
