About the destination

The clock tower was built in 1833 in commemoration of Dr. Peter Daniel Anthonisz. He was serving as the colonial surgeon of the Southern province during this time. People around his area liked him to the extent that the tower was built with public collections. The clock was gifted by Mudaliyar Samson de Abrew Rajapakse, as he was grateful for the treatment he received from his doctor. The tower is 25 meters tall and has 4 stories.

There is an inscription on the tower that reads as;

“This tower erected by public subscription to the perpetual memory of Peter Daniel Anthonisz (born in Galle) in the testimony of his skill and benevolence in relieving human suffering. MDCCCLXXXIII”.
