Hikkaduwa is located South of Sri Lanka. This place is well known for its coral sanctuary, the proximity of wonderful scuba diving sites to explore, and having a top surfing beach.
Hikkaduwa has always been one of the most popular beach resorts in Sri Lanka. You don’t have to worry as in the center of Hikkaduwa is a protected lagoon that creates a beautiful and safe snorkeling area. If you go further towards the south, the currents are stronger where surfing is the dominant water activity. The magnificent coral reef runs just offshore and populated by exotic fish and sea turtles that occasionally come ashore to lay their eggs.
Hikkaduwa is very well known as a surfing spot and most of all it annually attracts surfers from all over the world. There are plenty of good surfing points but most of them are reef breaks, none of them is risky since they all have a flat deep bottom. The size of the wave ranges up to 3 meters during the season.
The sea currents directly in front of the beach house can be particularly strong and dangerous and this makes swimming quite dangerous at times. Parents with young children should be very mindful of this. If you want to go swimming in the sea so badly you can always take a trip to the Coral Sanctuary at Hikkaduwa or otherwise go down the coast to Unawatuna where it is more sheltered.
The diving at Hikkaduwa is diverse and there is an abundance of marine life and shipwrecks to investigate. It is mentioned that whale sharks, large groupers, barracudas, moray eels, dogtooth tunas, and turtles are regularly sighted just off the coast at Hikkaduwa. There’s a large number of ships that have also floundered off this coast over the years, adding to the range of dive sites available. The main diving season in the southwest runs from November to April and there are several well-established diving centers from which you can choose.
