Kaballelena Raja Maha Viharaya, Wellagala is situated in Kurunegala in Sri Lanka. It is located in a village named Wellagala. The main deity of this temple is Suniyam.
Kaballelena Raja Maha Viharaya, Wellagala is a beautiful Buddhist temple that is dedicated to a deity named Suniyam. He is considered to be a powerful deity who is capable of placing curses on other people. He is also known as Kaballe Devi by the locals and it is the belief that the name of the temple came into being through this deity’s name.
It is believed that King Valgamba lived in the caves of this place when he was hiding and seeking refuge from the Chola invaders who were here during the Anuradhapura Kingdom. The main significance of this temple is the cave temple which is divided into two shrines as the Stupa cave and the cave of reclining Buddha. The reclining Buddha statue is about 50 feet long and is stated to be one of the longest statues in the entire world. This was declared as an archeological protected monument in 1974.
Go on McCallum Road and turn right onto Sri Sangaraja Mawatha. Continue onto Colombo – Katunayake Expressway and take the Katunayake exit. Turn left onto Divulapitiya Road and turn onto Kurunegala Road. Turn left onto Kalugamuwa-Wariyapola Road and turn left onto Ganewatta Road. Then turn left onto Sri Sarananda Mawatha to reach your destination.
Go on Bauddhaloka Road and turn left onto Katugastota-Kurunegala-Puttalam Highway. Turn right onto Ganewatta Road and turn left onto Sri Sarananda Mawatha to reach your destination
