Kalpitiya Dutch Fort

Kalpitiya Dutch Fort is situated in Kalpitiya in Sri Lanka. It was built between 1667 and 1676 by the Dutch back in past. It also has a rich history that is worth learning and knowing.

About the destination

Kalpitiya Dutch Fort is a square-shaped structure that consists of walls that rises for 4 meters. It has been constructed using coral, limestone from the area. It consists of stunning bastions at every four corners and the British took over the fort in 1795 and occupied it until the mid 19th century in 1859. It was used as a base by the Sri Lankan Navy for its training and operational activity.

History of the Kalpitiya Dutch Fort

Back in the past Kalpitiya was known as Kav Putti by the ancient Tamils. This place was a popular hub for Arab merchants and when the Portuguese took over the country the king requested help from Dutch. Thus Dutch took over the country and built a fort in Kalpitiya thus naming it as Kalpitiya Dutch Fort. The construction of the fort finished in 1676.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Go on McCallum Road and enter the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway from Colombo. Take the exit toward Puttalam. Exit from Katunayake and merge onto Chilaw – Colombo Main Road and go for 50.6 km.

Then go on Colombo Puttalam Road and then turn left on to onto Kalpitiya Road and you will be able to reach your destination.

From Kalpitiya

You have to continue on the Kalpitiya road. Then
turn left at Varuthappadatha Valibar Sangam. Turn left at Rishad Baby
Center onto Hospital Road and you will be able to reach your destination.
