Kandalama Reservoir is situated in the Central province of Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful and calming man-made lake. This reservoir was created to supply water for farming and irrigation. It is located in a town named Kandalama.  

About Kandalama Reservoir

Kandalama Reservoir is 4.8 km long and 2.3 km wide, with a square area of 102 km2 and a volume of 33,300,000 m3. The walls of the dams have a height of 21 m and a width of 1,600 m. It is so huge that people tend to wonder whether it is made by giants.

The lake has two outlets, the first one measures about a hundred yards, through which a river is constantly flowing and the second one is near the opposite side of the embankment, which is usually dry, and carries off water only when the lake is unusually high.

This is a popular place among tourists and you will see locals bathing in this area.

How to reach your destination

From Colombo

Take the McCallum road then go on the Colombo-Katunayake expressway and exit from the Outer Circular. Turn right onto Colombo-Kandy road. Turn left onto  Ambepussa – Trincomalee Highway and turn right onto Link Road.

Turn left onto Dambulla – Bakamuna Road and turn left onto Kandalama Road. Turn right onto Araula Junction and turn left to reach your destination.

From Dambulla

Head northeast on Ambepussa – Trincomalee Highway. Turn left onto Dambulla – Bakamuna Road and turn left onto Kandalama Road. Turn right onto Araula Junction and turn left to reach your destination.
