Kanniya Hot Water Springs

Kanniya Hot Water Springs is a famous hot spring well in Sri Lanka. There are seven wells in the shape of a square. This is located in Trincomalee. These wells are only 3-4 feet deep so that it allows you to see the bottom very well.

About the destination

Many people from around the world come to bathe in this Kanniya Hot Water Springs. The temperature of the wells is considerably high but varies from one spring to another. The most fascinating fact is that they run out of water when 10 to 15 buckets are drawn out.

According to a board put up at this place, it is stated that this place was a part of a pond complex used by the Buddhist monks at that time. This is a famous tourist site.

History of the place

This is a famous place where the Tamils perform their Hindu rituals. They perform these rituals in memory of lost loved ones as it is believed to have been done by Ravana in the epic story of  Ramayana.

This place was under the LTTE when Sri Lanka was under the tiger attack but not anymore. It is believed that these wells have healing powers and can cure different types of ailments. It is believed that this belonged to a great Buddhist monastery but after the attacks, only a few remainings are left up to date.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

You have to go on McCallum Road and take the Colombo – Katunayake Expressway. Take the Outer-Circular exit and turn right onto Colombo-Kandy Road. Turn left onto Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway. Turn left onto Sardhapura-Kanniya Road to reach your destination.

From Trincomalee

You have to head south toward Uppuveli Road. Then exit the roundabout onto Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway, Ambepussa – Trincomalee Highway, Kandy Road.

Then turn right at Anuradhapura Junction onto Puttalam – Anuradhapura – Trincomalee Highway. Turn left then right and you will reach your destination.
