Kaudulla National Parks

Kaudulla National Park is situated in Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. It spreads for 6656 hectares and is connected to the corridor between nearby Minneriya wildlife park and Kaudulla. There are 250 elephants that you can witness in the park.

About the destination

Kaudulla National Park has an average rainfall which is between 1500 mm to 2000 mm. Two-thirds of it is underwater and the best time to visit is between August to December and September to October. It was opened in 2002 and there are three national parks within the region. They are the Kaudulla national park, Hurulu Eco Park, and Minneriya national park. This place is quite popular among locals and foreigners.

Ecosystem and wildlife in Kaudulla National Park

There are other water bodies as well in the Kaudulla National Park which are Aluth Oya stream, Puliyan Kalla Wewa, Hatharas Kotuwa Wewa and so much more. As for the wildlife, there are herds of elephants varying from the baby elephants to adult elephants. There are 23 species of wildlife apart from elephants such as leopards, sloth bears, deers, and several more animals. You can also witness peacocks, eagles, black-headed Ibis and so much more other beautiful birds. As for reptiles, you will be able to see a black-Indian turtle, freshwater turtles, and flap-shelled turtles.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Go on McCallum Road. Take Colombo – Katunayake Expressway. Take Ekala – Kotadeniyawa Road. Go on Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway and drive to your destination.

From Polonnaruwa

Head northwest on Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit and turn right onto Galoya Road and turn right at the park to reach your destination.
