Knuckles

The knuckles mountain range is situated in the districts of Matale and Kandy. The name knuckles were given because of its view as it has the knuckles of a clenched fist. The Sinhalese addresses this place as the “Dumbara Kadu Watiya”  which means the mist-laden mountain range.

About the destination

Knuckles is considered one of the toughest hiking trails in the country. There are nine peaks which are over 1200 meters in the Knuckles Range. The highest peak is named “Gombaniya” and it is 1906 meters in height. The mountain range is home for a large amount of fauna and flora. It covers up to 18512 hectares of land and named as a World Heritage conservation area.

Things to do in Knuckles

You can explore the 34 peaks that are in the Knuckles mountain range which is ranging in height from 1900 meters to 900 meters.

You can also trek in the mini world’s end which is a fine observation point in the Knuckles mountain range.

You can go on rock climbing, mountain biking, and caving if you are interested you could also try joining in a nature trek or walking safari.

Best time to travel and hike in the Knuckles mountain range

The best time to travel is in March, between April and June, and also in August.

Getting to the location

From Colombo

Take the McCallum road then go on the Colombo-Katunayake expressway and exit from the Outer Circular. Turn right onto Colombo-Kandy road. Turn left onto Peradeniya-Katugastota and turn left at the bridge. Turn right after 280 meters and you will reach your destination.

From Matale

You have to take Kandy Road. Take Wattegama – Udugoda – Panwila Rd to Katugastota – Madawala – Bambarella Road. Turn left at Thakshila Pre School onto Katugastota – Madawala – Bambarella Road and drive to your destination.

Special information

  • Females are not recommended to travel alone as it is rather isolated and it is safer to travel in groups.
  • There’s a large number of leeches around the area so better be careful about where you are placing your feet but don’t worry you can simply brush them off.
  • A one day hike would usually cost around 5000-6000 rupees per person. This is the full package including the park permits, guide fees, jeep rental, food, and water.
