Kudumbigala

Kudumbigala is situated in the Kumana village in Sri Lanka. It is a monastery that lies 11 miles away from Panama. It was built back in 246 B.C. It is believed that it was built during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa.

About the destination

Kudumbigala is situated in the Eastern Province. This was first established as a refugee camp for the Buddhist monks who wanted to get away from the busy cities and lead a peaceful life. Over 200 rock caves were found in this long lost monastery. The significance of this place is that this is the only cylindrical Dagaba surviving up to date in Sri Lanka.

History of the destination

It was stated in a Brahimi inscription that was found in Maha Sudharshana Lena that Kudumbigala was constructed as an Aranya Senansanaya back in the pre-Christian era. It Is also stated that the Maha Sudharshana Lena was built and gifted by the great warrior Nandimitra who was one of the Dutugemunu’s giants namely Dasa Maha Yodhayo to the Arahats of that time.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Go on McCallum Road and turn right onto Kynsey Road. Turn right onto Athurugiriya Road. Then turn right onto Southern Expressway and take the exit from the Beliatta interchange. Turn right onto Wellawaya By-Pass and turn right onto Panama-Kumbukkana Road to reach your destination.

From Arugam Bay

Turn left onto Manal Road and turn right onto Panama Road. Then turn right onto Panama-Kumbukkana Road to reach your destination.
