Kumana National Park

Kumana National Park is situated in the Monaragala district in Sri Lanka. It receives an annual rainfall of about 1300 millimeters and has a mean temperature of about 27 degrees Celsius. It is a huge area that contains beautiful wildlife, fauna, and flora.

About the destination

Kumana National Park spreads for an area of about 35,664 hectares and other several pools are closeby which are the Thumulla Wewa, Kotalinda Wewa, and Kudawila Wewa. It has off beaten track which can be accessed only using a 4WD vehicle. Now you can sit in relax in the modern luxury tents which provides the service which is given by a 5-star hotel.

Ecosystem and wildlife in Kumana National Park

Kumana National Park consists of many species of all fauna, flora, and wildlife. This place consists of a mangrove swamp that spreads to an area of 200 hectares named “Kumana Willu”. During May and June, many water birds nest here. Three turtle species are rare to be seen namely Olive ridley turtle, Loggerhead turtle, and Green turtle.

There are reptiles such as the Mugger crocodile, Indian black turtle, and Indian flap-shelled turtle. It also has 430 bird species of which 200 are common. Between April to July thousands and thousands of birds migrate to the Kumana National Park.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Take Colombo – Galle – Hambantota – Wellawaya Highway. Turn right at Astron Limited onto C.P. De Silva Mawatha. Take Darley Road, T. B. Jayah Mawatha, Dr. Colvin R de Silva Mawatha, Union Place, F. R. Senanayake Mawatha, and Dr. C.W.W Kannangara Mawatha to Colombo – Batticaloa Highway.

From Monaragala

Drive from Colombo – Batticaloa Highway. Take Southern Expressway. Continue on Colombo – Horana Road. Take Piliyandala Bypass Road and Moratuwa – Piliyandala Road, Piliyandala Road to C.P. De Silva Mawatha in Moratuwa.
