Bathing Pool is also known as the Kumara Pokuna in Polonnaruwa. Kumara Pokuna stands for “Kumara” which means prince and “Pokuna” means pool in Sinhala. This is located close to the royal palace complex in Polonnaruwa.
About the destination
The Bathing Pool aka Prince pool lies just outside the southeast corner of the palace grounds. It also consists of a central lotus island and has two of its crocodile -mouth spouts which are left up to date for the future generations to witness. It is confirmed that the foundations to the right side were a changing room.
Structure of the Bathing Pool
Bathing Pool which is also named as the Kumara Pokuna is completely made out of stone slabs. It is built by King Parakramabahahu the great and located next to the Council Chamber of the king. It is also stated in the Mahawamsa that there was a square pond named “Sila Pokkharani”.
Reaching the destination
From Colombo
Drive from Colombo – Katunayake Expressway, Ekala – Kotadeniyawa Road, and Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway to Polonnaruwa and turn left to reach your destination.
From Polonnaruwa
Head northwest on Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit and take a slight right at 26th Mile Post onto Polonnaruwa-Hingurakgoda Road.
Turn left at Origin Communication onto Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway. Turn left and you will reach your destination.
