Kuttam Pokuna means twin ponds or twin pools. It is situated in Anuradhapura. These two ponds belong to the Abhayagiri aramic complex and it is believed to have been used by the monks at that time. The origins of the pond are not well known though it is believed that it has been built during the time of King Aggabodhi I.
The smaller pond which is the northern pond is believed to have been constructed first and the larger one in a later stage. Both of them are connected through a pipeline at the bottom. This Northern pond is 91 feet long which is 28 meters and the other pond is 132 feet long which is 40 meters.
The water to these ponds has been supplied through underground pipelines and it is sent through several filtering chambers. After going through all the filtering it finally falls to the northern pond through the mouth of a dragon. The water of both these ponds is drained from a small outlet in the smaller northern pond.
The Kuttam Pokuna is one of the best achievements in the field of hydrological engineering and it is an outstanding architectural and artistic creation of the Sinhalese in the past.
