About the Lover’s Leap Waterfall

Lover’s Leap Waterfall is a beautiful waterfall situated in Hawa Eliya area in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka with a height of 30 meters.  The area is full of stunning tea plantations and when you reach the waterfall, you will be able to see the most mesmerizing views of the surrounding tea plantations, the city of Nuwara Eliya, Bomburu Ella reservoir and Ambewela area.

About the destination

Lover’s Leap Waterfall is 3 km away from the Nuwara Eliya town. The origin of the water flowing in Lover’s Leap falls is streams and brooks that start from the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka, which is  Pidurutalagala. The beauty of the waterfall is such that your whole day will be enlightened. The waterfall falls over hard granite ledges and the water is collected and saved for drinking.

There is an amusing legend behind the waterfall, on how it got this unique name. Once, there has been a Prince who has gone on hunting and lost his way. While he was lost and afraid, there has been a beautiful girl who found him wandering around. Though both of them fell madly in love, the prince’s parents didn’t approve of their affair. So, the young lovers decided to leap from the top of the waterfall to meet death, believing their love will live forever.

Legend of Lover’s Leap Waterfall

There is an amusing legend behind the waterfall. It is stated that during the dry seasons the flow is weak. Once there has been a Prince who has gone on hunting and lost his way. While he was lost and afraid there has been a beautiful damsel who rescued him. Thus both of them have fallen madly in love and they were inseparable. Somehow the prince’s subjects didn’t agree with the idea and they decided to immortalize their love story by leaping from the top of the waterfall to their death. Thus the waterfall has received its name as the “Lover’s Leap Waterfall”.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Take Colombo-Thalawakele-Nuwara Eliya Highway (A7) and reach Nuwara Eliya town. Tale Nuwara Eliya – Udapussellawa road (B332) and turn left to Lover’s Leap road. From the point you park your vehicle, it is about a 400m uphill climb.

From Kandy

Take Peradeniya-Badulla- Chenkalady highway (A5)  and reach Nuwara Eliya town and follow the above directions to reach your destination.
