Madunagala Hot Springs

Share

Madunagala Hot springs are one of mother nature’s most valued gifts that Sri Lanka has received. Though there is no exact time frame of the discovery of the hot water pools, as per the legends, it is stated that a group of 12,000 Buddhist monks from a nearby temple, suffering from an incurable skin rash had been told of its miraculous healing quality through a dream in the 5th century BC.

As you enter the premises, you will be greeted by series of stalls that sell local fruits, sweets and various trinkets and knickknacks and many soothing medicinal herbal drinks on offer for hundreds of people visiting the place.

There are six hot spring pools located in the site, and it is said to believe that these hot water spring out after being heated from the earth’s mantle which is scientifically referred to as the geothermal heat.

Due to this reaction, the water inherently contains 22 earth minerals, such as; Sulphate, Nitrate, Calcium, Sodium, and Chloride, etc. Due to this combination of minerals, the healing power of the hot spring is only there if you do not use soap. Also, it’s best not to use soap or liter around because it’s our responsibility as the visitors to save it for future generations.
