History of the place

Mahamevnawa, meaning “Great Cloud Monastery,” was the primary monastery made in Sri Lanka and the place where Arahant Mahinda Thero first brought the Buddha’s teachings to the island.

Mahamevanawa Buddhist Monastery was founded in 1999 in Sri Lanka with the aid of Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero, its sole purpose is to spread the unique teachings of the Buddha. The monastery is a warm and welcoming place for everybody to analyze proper happiness via Dhamma and meditation. Its main purpose is to benefit the spiritual development of people through the lessons of Buddha. Here the Buddha’s teachings are provided in a cutting-edge language that is straightforward to understand.
