Mahatma Gandhi Park is situated in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka. It is just a few kilometers away from the Batticaloa fort. It was built by Former President Mahinda Rajapakshe and declared open on March 22nd, 2013 in the Dayata Kirula Programme.
About the destination
Mahatma Gandhi Park is situated in the Bazaar street. It is a modernized park that is situated along the Batticaloa lagoon. Its main purpose is to allow both foreign and local visitors to take strolls along the park to improve their physique and mental wellbeing.
History of the park
There is no main reason for it to be named as the Mahatma Gandhi Park. Even though it has no direct relation to Mahatma Gandhi, it is dedicated to him for the efforts he made to bring peace to India along with Sri Lanka. There is a huge golden statue of Mahatma Gandhi established in this place. This place was a result of the effort taken to uplift recreational space for the people around the city.
Things to do in Mahatma Gandhi Park
Mahatma Gandhi Park is just the perfect place for gatherings, family picnics, and other fitness activities. Here you can also see some fishermen along with their boats going out on the sea to catch their daily supply of fish. You could also witness some rare types of birds hanging out on the treetops.
Reaching the destination
From Colombo
Go on McCallum Road and T. B. Jayah Mawatha to Maradana Road. Take Colombo – Katunayake Expressway.
Take Veyangoda Road, Ekala – Kotadeniyawa road to Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway. Then follow Ambepussa – Kurunegala – Trincomalee Highway and take Elahera – Giritale Road.
Go on Trincomalee Highway to Bazaar street in Batticaloa. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Bazaar Street and the destination will be on the left.
From Batticaloa
Head south toward Trincomalee Highway. Turn left at Yamaha Plaza onto Trincomalee Highway. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto Trinco Road. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Bazaar Street.
