Nainativu

Nainativu is a small island situated in the Northern Province. The name of the town is given because of the people who live in it namely the “Naga people” which is a clan. This place is also famously known as the “Nagadeepa”.

About the Nainativu Island

Nainativu aka Nagadeepa is situated off the coast of the Jaffna peninsula. The main significance of this island is that it consists of a famous Hindu Kovil named the “Nagapooshani Amman temple” which is venerated both by Hindu and Buddhist people. It is one of the 64 Shakthi Peethas and there is also the famous Buddhist temple namely the “Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya”.

History of the Nainativu Island

There is a legendry story that states that once there were two brothers who fought for a gem-studded throne it is also stated that this happened in an island named the Nainativu. Then Lord Buddha has come to this island to solve this flaming issue between the two brothers and finally achieved to establish peace among the two siblings.

How to Reaching the Nainativu Island

From Colombo

Take Colombo – Katunayake Expressway. Take Kandy Road, Kandy – Jaffna Highway to Karadippokku-Uruththirapuram Road. Take Parantan-Pooneryn Road. Take a ferry and then you can reach your destination.

From Jaffna

Follow Hospital Street to Jaffna-Point Pedro Road. Follow Jaffna-Pannai-Kayts Road. Take the ferry and drive to your destination in Northern Province
