Description

Nonpareil Estate Fall

Hirikatu Oya/ Kiriketi Oya and Belihul Oya are the main water bodies in Belihul Oya area. They create several small waterfalls in the area before they join the Samanalawewa reservoir. One such waterfall is  Nonpareil Estate Waterfall, which is a relatively large three-step cascade located within the Nonpareil Tea estate.

About the destination

The fall is divided into two sections. There is a small base pool in the lower section where one can have a safe dip. This is a roadside cascade that is situated along Nonpareil Estate road, which leads to Horton Plains.  The exact height is unknown but could be somewhere around 20-30m. The fall is fed by unnamed stream originating from Horton plains and it eventually conjoins with Hirikatu Oya.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Once you reach Belihuloya area on A4 road, turn left to Nonpareil Estate road (There are many signboards at the turning point, so it is hard to miss).  This is the road to Baker’s Bend and Nagrak Bungalow as well. Travel about 06km on this narrow road until you reach a small school building to your left. Just as you pass this building, there is a bend and once you go past it, the falls would be visible by the road. A vehicle with high ground clearance is ideal, but even a small car can survive the dilapidated road if you drive carefully.

From Kandy

Take Peradeniya-Badulla- Chenkalady highway (A5)  and reach Keppetipola. From there, take Keppetipola-Boralanda-Haputale (B353) and reach Haputale town. Take a right to Beragala-Hali Ela road (A16) and join Colombo – Batticaloa highway (A4) at the Beragala junction. Travel along this road, until you meet Nonpareil Estate road on the right side.
