Panduwasnuwara Kingdom

Panduwasnuwara city is about an ancient city in the city of Kurunegala, functioned as the capital of Sri Lanka during the reign of the King Pandukabhaya, Panduwasnuwara was the capital during the 12th century, during this era the Panduwasnuwara city held the tooth relic, as it is a sign of the Kingship, without which no one shall be recognized as king nor a queen. The kind Pandukabhaya had to retrieve the tooth relic as the south Indian Invaders stole it.

Though Panduwasnuwara does not have many sites to visit, there are only the ruins of the building of the kingdom is spread through 20 hectares. As Sri Lankans, many of us heard about the story of Unmada Chithra and Deegha Gamini, the story of the real-like rapunzel.

Unmanada Chithra was imprisoned to keep her away from the association of men as her child would bring death to the brothers of the Unmanda Chithra. Traveling and exploring through these ruins, you will also be able to see ektamgeya (tower, where she was imprisoned and was kept as a captive)

The tower (ektamgeya) was given more preference than the temple of tooth relic. This tower was guarded with 6 ft wide moat. Furthermore, it was also stated that this tunnel and the place were linked through a tunnel that runs under bypassing the trench. However, this theory is yet to be proved.

As you enter through the gates of the Panduwasnuwara, you will feel that empty lustiness because it’s a stroll through a city on ruins. However, to a person who enthusiastic to know more about the culture and heritage of another nation or for someone to explore the reality of the folklore of the countries, this is the best place to see as there were many theories and stories based on Panduwasnuwara.
