Polonnaruwa Vatadage is situated in Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka. It is believed to have been built during the reign of Parakramabahu but King Nissanka did major renovations to this place, as a result, what you see today is probably his work.

About the destination

Polonnaruwa Vatadage was built for the protection of a small stupa and the structure has two stone platforms that have beautiful stone carvings. You can enter the lower platform by the entrance that is facing the north and the entrance of the second platform is four doorways that face the four cardinal points. Four seated Buddha statues face each of the four entrances.

What to see in Polonnaruwa Vatadage

Polonnaruwa Vatadage is situated in a quadrangular area which is named the Dalada Maluwa. It consists of the oldest and the most sacred monuments of the city. It is somewhat similar to the designs belonging to the Anuradhapura period like the Thuparamaya and Lankaramaya.
