Pothgul Rajamaha Viharaya is situated in Rathnapura in Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful Buddhist temple that is believed to have been built by King Vatta Gamini Abhaya who is also known as Walagamba.
Pothgul Rajamaha Viharaya is believed to have been built in the 1st century. It was renovated during the time of King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe. The most significant aspect of this temple is the 40 feet reclining Buddha statue which is carved completely out of natural stone. You will also be able to see statues of deities like Vishnu and Saman close to the head of the Buddha statue. There is a pond named “Daru Pokunu” which means child pond which is believed to have medicinal powers.
In the area where Pothgul Rajamaha Viharaya is situated, you will be able to see a temple named Tampia Viharaya. The temple is built on top of a wooden platform and granite stumps and it is believed to have belonged to the time of King Kirthi Sri Rajasinghe.
Go on McCallum Road and turn right onto Kynsey Road. Turn right onto Athurugiriya Road and turn left onto Panadura-Nambapana-Ratnapura Highway. After 35.3 km turn left onto Ratnapura-Palawela-Karawita Road and turn right onto Pothgul Vihara Mawatha to reach your destination.
Go on Weralupa Road and turn left onto Colombo Road. Then turn left onto Ratnapura-Palawela-Karawita Road and turn right onto Pothgul Vihara Mawatha to reach your destination.
