Puravidu Bhavana also known as the Anuradhapura Archaeological Museum is located in the historical city of Anuradhapura. It is just a few meters away from the sacred Sri Maha Bodhiya. This place is a center of history that gives detailed information about the kingdoms in Sri Lanka.
About the location
Puravidu Bhavana (archaeological museum) is situated in the Kachcheri building which is between the Brazon palace and Ruwanweliseya. It was established in 1947 with the effort of Dr. Senerath Paranavithana. This is one of the oldest museums in the Cultural Triangle area.
What it contains
Puravidu Bhavana (archaeological museum) contains very valuable antiques back from the past. It has inscriptions, Buddha statues, carvings, drawings, coins, pieces of jewelry, pots, gems, beads, and all other various things you could imagine about.
Most of all, it has a significant model of the majestic Thuparamaya Vatadage and a relic chamber found at Mihintale Kantaka Chetiya Dagoba. It a very important museum in Sri Lanka.
Reaching the destination
You have to go on the McCallum Road, AC6, and T. B. Jayah Mawatha to Maradana Road, P De S Kularatne Mawatha, AC19.
Take the Colombo – Katunayake Expressway, E03 to Canada Friendship Road, AB9 in Katunayake. Then take the Ekala – Kotadeniyawa Road, B111, B308 and
Kalugamuwa-Wariyapola Rd to Kurunegala – Minuwangoda Road, A10 in Wariyapola.
You have to go to the A28. Take Dakunu Dagoba Road to Thuparama Mawatha to reach your destination
Important information
You can visit the museum from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
It is closed on Tuesdays and public holidays. The entrance fee is just LKR 200.
