Ratnapura Portuguese Fort

Ratnapura Portuguese Fort is situated in Rathnapura in Sri Lanka. It was built by the Portuguese around 1618-1620. This was somehow demolished when the Sri Lankan kings took over the place but it is stated that some of the walls and a stone slab are remaining up to date.

About the destination

Initially, the place where Ratnapura Portuguese Fort is built was the place where the Maha Saman Devalaya was. The Portuguese took over the area, demolished the Devalaya, and built a fort and a church. But later King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe recaptured Rathnapura destroyed the fort and church then built a temple in here. When the Dutch took over they rebuilt the fort using a higher ground.
