Samadhi Buddha statue

The majestic Samadhi Buddha statue is situated in Mahamewna park in Anuradhapura. This is a very sacred statue and a famous tourist site. This statue depicts Buddha in the position named Dhyana Mudra. It is the posture of meditation that is associated with his first Enlightenment which is also named Nirvana.

About the destination

Samadhi Buddha statue is said to be constructed in the 3rd or the 4th century. It is made out of dolomite marble and has a height of 7 feet 3 inches which is 2.21 meters. Somehow in 1886 this statue was found fallen to the ground with damages to the nose. It was rebuilt and the nose was reconstructed. But once again in 1914, it was found damaged by treasure hunters, and then it was reconstructed again.

History of the destination

The name Samadhi could have been derived from Buddha’s Enlightenment or some other phenomenon it is dependant on the belief of the sculpturer. In the position named Dhyana Mudra, Buddha       sits cross-legged with his upturned palms placed one over the other on his lap. This position is known all over the world among the Buddhist community. Thus it is one of the most typical pieces of Buddhist sculpture.  You shouldn’t confuse it with the almost similar “Earth-Touching Mudra,”. It depicts the action of Buddha to fend off the illusions projected by Mara, who was desperate to prevent Buddha from realizing that the entire world is an illusion.
