Sea Turtle Hatchery & Rescue Center is situated on Galle road in Hikkaduwa. It is a place where the turtle eggs that have been laid on the beach are preserved and taken care of until the baby turtles are hatched. 

About the destination

Sea Turtle Hatchery & Rescue Center works hard to preserve the limited amount of turtles that are left in Sri Lanka. They take care of disabled turtles and especially provide shelter to the eggs that are laid on the beach. They preserve and take care of the eggs until the baby turtles are hatched and come out. They then provide food and shelter to the baby turtles until they are of age and release them back to the water they belong to.

Things to do in Sea Turtle Hatchery & Rescue Center

You can see the baby turtles in action in their protected surroundings in this place. You can observe the eggs, their different patterns, and if you are fortunate enough you may be able to see a baby turtle hatch. If any baby turtles are matured enough to be released to the water you could grab the best opportunity of your life to do a service to nature by releasing a turtle back to its habitat.

How to reach the destination

From Colombo

Take Colombo – Katunayake Expressway. Follow Southern Expressway to Ambalangoda – Elpitiya – Pitigala Road. Continue on Galle-Elpitiya Road. Take Kahawa – Batapola Road to Colombo Road, Colombo – Galle – Hambantota – Wellawaya Road, Galle Road in Peraliya to reach your destination.

From Galle

Take Steel Road, Crips Rd, E.A. Wijesooriya Mawatha, and Kandewatta Road to Colombo Road. Turn right at Sripalie Contractors (Pvt) Ltd onto Colombo Road, Colombo – Galle – Hambantota – Wellawaya Road and the destination will be on your left.
