As the name depicts, Single Tree hill has just one single tree at its summit, and it is also known as One Tree Hill or single tree hill. Single Tree Hill mountain situated in Nuwara-Eliya in the Central Province of Sri Lanka and Single Tree Hill considered as the 10th highest mountain in Sri Lanka. You have to travel approx. 1.5 km along the Peradeniya-Badulla-Chenkaladi Highway from Nuwara-Eliya and the road that leads you to the mountain is named Single Tree Hill Road.

The mountain is standing at the height of 2,100 m, and one could climb up the peak within one and a half to two hours. Could be watched the real beauty of Nuwara Eliya from the mountain peak. Lake Gregory, Lover’s leap falls, Piduruthalagala Mountain, Adam’s Peak, Seven Virgin Hills, Uda-Radella Mountain, and many mountains tops and landscape can explore from Single Tree Hill  

Conical Hill and Hakgala Mountain are a few magnificent views from the hilltop on a sunny day. Can observe a clear reflection of the mountain through the crystal water in the Gregory Lake, if one could see down from the hills at around 5.30 a.m – 7.00 a.m.

You would even be amazed to watch the best cloud formations during this time. Climbing up the Single Tree hills would never be tiring because you will be walking through greenish tea plantations, and there is also a Buddhist temple on your way. One could slowly climb up while resting in between; taking some photographs of the surroundings cannot be adventurous hiking by any chance. It is also ideal for bird watching, and the yellow eared bulbul is one of the rarest spices living up in the hills.

How to reach Single Tree Hill

From Nuwara Eliya

Head southwest on New Bazaar Rd toward Bale Bazaar St > At the roundabout, continue straight onto Badulla Rd/New Bazaar Rd/PBC Hwy/Queen Elizabeth Dr/A5 > Turn right at Ratha Tours Colombo onto Single Tree Rd > At Single Tree Temple, continue onto Single Tree Hill Road

The best time to visit

Avoid Rainy days. December to April is the best time. July and August also recommended.

Tips

  • Start Early morning to enjoy the sunrise. But if it’s misty and rainy you can delay it till the sky is clear.
  • Take a long cloth so you can visit the temple as well when you hiking Single Tree Hill
  • Take 1 water bottle.
