Sri Muthumariamman Temple

Sri Muthumariamman Temple is an iconic Hindu temple that is situated in Matale. This Kovil is dedicated to a god named Mariamman who is considered to be the goddess of rain and fertility. Every year large numbers of devotees gather here to pay their respects to Mariamman.  It is an age-old tradition and practice.

About the destination

Sri Muthumariamman Temple was built back in the year 1874 in a land that was originally a paddy field. The kovil was later destroyed during the anti-Tamil riots back in 1983. Somehow later in the years, it was restored to its original grandeur.

There is a majestic Gopuram named as the “Raja Gopuram”. It has a height of 108 feet and considered to be one of the largest Gopurams in Sri Lanka. There are a total of 1008 finely finished statues and sculptures which showcases the handiwork of the famous sculptors of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.                  

Festivals held at Sri Muthumariamman Temple

Several festivals are celebrated in this temple among them the main religious festivals held at the Sri Muthumariamman Temple include the chariot festival. This is celebrated during February or March. There is also a large hall which is used mainly for ceremonies such as weddings.

Getting to the destination

From Colombo

Take the McCallum road then go on the Colombo-Katunayake expressway and exit from the Ja-Ela exit. Turn right onto Chilaw – Colombo Main Road and turn right onto Kurunegala Road. Turn left onto Kandy Road to reach your destination.

From Matale

You have to head south on Kandy Road. Turn right at SIP ABACUS MATALE toward Matale – Illukkumbura – Pallegama – Giradurukotte Road. Turn left at Mandandawela Junction onto Kandy Road Road to reach your destination.
