Sunandarama Maha Viharaya is situated in Ambalangoda in Sri Lanka. This is a very prestigious and well-known temple established back in 1867. There’s a high number of honorable monks to serve this magnificent Viharaya.

About the destination

Sunandarama Maha Viharaya is situated in the Southern Province in Sri Lanka. It traditionally belongs to the Sathara Peruwa which means the four states that are benefitted from the Vihara. For a very long time, these four states have supported and maintained the Viharaya. It has two stories such as the Maluwa(sermon hall) and the monastery (Awasa).

History of Sunandarama Maha Viharaya

Sunandarama Maha Viharaya has a history that dates back to the 18th century BC. In the past, this place was a residence to nuns and it is recorded that in 1750 the “Bodhi” was planted in this place. The statue house in this place is the most ancient building which is stated to have belonged to the Kandyan era.

From Colombo

Go on McCallum Road and turn right onto Kynsey Road. Go for 450 meters then turn right onto Athurugiriya Road. Turn right onto Southern Expressway and take the exit from the Dodangoda interchange. Turn left onto Ambalangoda Road and then turn right onto S. G. A. De Silva Mawatha. Then after 96 meters turn left onto Paniyandoowa Road to reach your destination.

From Ambalangoda

Go on Ambalangoda – Batapola Road and turn right onto S. G. A. De Silva Mawatha. Then after 96 meters turn left onto Paniyandoowa Road to reach your destination.
