Surfing and kite surfing can be enjoyed at its best at Kalpitiya. Both these sports are extreme sports that require good practice and training of at least three to four days. But both these sports are engaging that once you try you will want to try it over and over again.
About the destination
Kalpitiya is a 4-5 hour ride from Colombo so it is better to plan your journey way ahead. The Kalpitiya Lagoon is just perfect for both surfing and kite surfing. In kite surfing, you have to tie yourself to a huge kite and keep surfing. If you practice properly and get the best out of it you will come to Kalpitiya for more. You should keep in mind that this could be dangerous that if you do it incorrectly you might even break a leg.
Things to consider before going on surfing and kite surfing
The best season for surfing and kite surfing is from May to September but the time is just perfect if it is windy enough. You have to be able to swim to do this sport and also you need at least 15 hours of practice to do this properly. This is an expensive sport which costs about 25-30 euros per hour which is about 60k for the whole training. This is because the equipment is expensive and the training is thorough.
Reaching the destination
From Colombo
Go onMcCallum Road and enter the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway from Colombo. Take the exit toward Puttalam. Exit from Katunayake and merge onto Chilaw – Colombo Main Road and go for 50.6 km. Turn left at S.M Mobile Service & Electronics onto Kalpitiya Road for 39.7 km and you will reach your destination.
From Kalpitiya
You have to go on the Kalpitiya road. Turn left at Varuthappadatha Valibar Sangam. Turn left at Kalpitiya Village Restaurant and turn right to reach your destination.
