The Shiva Devale

The Shiva Devale is situated in Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. It is the second oldest structure in Polonnaruwa. It’s history folds back to the brief Chola period when the Indian invaders established in the city and took control of it for a long time.

About the destination

The Shiva Devale is a 13^th-century Hindu temple. It is dedicated to the god Shiva who is a major deity in the Hindu religion. There are two Shiva Devale such as the Shiva Devale no 1 and the Shiva Devale no 2. It is popular for its high-quality stonework that fits together just way too perfectly.

Structure of the Shiva Devale

The Shiva Deval No 1 is situated in the south of the Quadrangle. It has a domed brick roof that has collapsed. It is stated that when it was being excavated several good bronzes were found which are currently preserved in the Archeological museum. The Shiva Devale no 2 is entirely built out of stone and it can be still seen up to date in its same original form. You will also be able to see the statue of Shiva’s mount which is the bull named Nandi.

How to reach the destination

From Colombo

Go on McCallum Road. You have to take the Colombo – Kandy Road and drive to Elahera – Giritale Road in North Central Province and turn right onto Maradankadawala- Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu highway and turn left at bicycle rental to reach your destination.

From Polonnaruwa

Head northwest on Maradankadawala-Habarana-Thirukkondaiadimadu Highway. At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit and turn right at Bicycle Rental to reach your destination.
