Halpewatte Tea Factory

Halpewatte Tea Factory is situated in Ella in Sri Lanka. It was built in the year 1940 during the British reign. The factory spreads for 1230 meters in the Uva region and located just 6 km from Ella. It was a small factory producing just 20,000 kg of tea per month back in the day.

About the destination

Halpewatte Tea Factory was owned by Mr. A.P.D Abeyrathna who was the chairman of the U.H.E Group in 1970. It is the largest tea factory in the province of Uva. This is quite a popular tourist destination due to its massive production of tea. The tourists will get a guided tour around the Halpewatte Tea Factory. They can use this opportunity to learn and try tea tasting and the manufacturing process of the best of Ceylon Tea.

History of Halpewatte Tea Factory

When it was established back in the past it was a very small tea factory but as time went by the scenario changed. In 2008 it was named as the largest tea producer in the Uva province. It currently produces about 150,000 kg of tea per month and posses over 40 lorries and a manpower force of over 300 workers.

When you visit you can go on a tea picking journey and learn the tea manufacturing process which will finally be awarded by a breath-taking cup of tea.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

You have to take Colombo – Katunayake Expressway. Then take the Southern Expressway. Follow Colombo – Galle – Hambantota – Wellawaya Highway, Wellawaya-Ella-Kumbalwela Highway, and drive to your destination in Uva Province.

From Badulla

Take Keppetipola Road to Bandarawela Road. Follow Bandarawela – Badulla Road and drive to your destination.
