Rekawa Lagoon is situated in Tangalle in Sri Lanka. It has a rich biodiversity in fauna, flora, and aquatic life. It is a small lagoon surrounded by mangroves and it is linked to the Indian Ocean through an inland waterway.
Rekawa Lagoon has a water surface area of 2.4 km2 which has a narrow inland waterway of 3 kilometers. This is also a very shallow lagoon which has only a depth of 1.4 km which means 4.6 feet. Most of the parts of the lagoon are beautifully surrounded by the mangrove belt. The lagoon has a total hydro-catchment of about 225 km2.
The most famous fishery done in here is the shrimp fishery. This is one of the main livelihoods that the people in the area depend on. However, the shrimp fishery is from October to April only because that is the season of shrimp fishery. The most abundant shrimp species in Rekawa Lagoon is the most famous White shrimp.
Go on McCallum Road and go on Colombo – Katunayake Expressway. Continue onto Southern Expressway and you have to take the exit from the Beliatta interchange.
Turn left onto Beliatta – Walasmulla Road and take the 2nd exit onto Colombo- Wellawaya Highway. Then turn right onto Rekawa Road to reach your destination.
