Sri Sumana Saman Devalaya is situated in Ratnapura in Sri Lanka. It is also known as the Maha Saman Devalaya. This is a shrine that is dedicated to the Saman deity.

About the destination

Sri Sumana Saman Devalaya is a kovil built dedicated to the Saman deity who is the deity that resides in Sri Pada Mountain(Adam’s Peak) which is also known as the Samanthakuta meaning the mountain which has the footprint of Saman in it. Saman deity is to be highly venerated in the Rathnapura area. It is stated that he has been a district administrator of the region contemporary to Lord Buddha.

History of Sri Sumana Saman Devalaya

The Sri Sumana Saman Devalaya has a long history it is stated that after the demise of the Saman deity his Deva clan built a shrine and started venerating him. It is also recorded that before the construction of Sri Sumana Saman Devalaya there has been a temple named Saparagama Viharaya. A monk named Ven. Seelawansa saw a dream about a statue in the wild and then brought it to this kovil.

Go on McCallum Road and turn right onto Kynsey Road. Turn left Dudley Senanayake Mawatha and turn right onto Athurugiriya Road.  Turn left onto Avissawella Road and turn right onto Meepe – Ingiriya Road then turn left onto Panadura-Nambapana-Ratnapura Highway to reach your destination.
