Batticaloa Lagoon

Batticaloa Lagoon is a huge water body that consists of many faunas, flora, and various other animal species. It is situated in the Batticaloa district in Sri Lanka. The lagoon is 56 km long and stretches between the districts of Ampara and Batticaloa.

About the destination

There are three main lagoons in Batticaloa named as Batticaloa lagoon, Valaichchenai lagoon, and Vakiri lagoon. Among them, the Batticaloa lagoon is the largest in the whole Batticaloa district. The locals in this area grow crops such as rice and coconut as well they engage themselves in shrimp farming.

Things to do in Batticaloa Lagoon

The lagoon encompasses a wide variety of migratory and resident birds in addition to wildlife. You can witness their impressive skills at work along with nature in the lagoon. Fishing boats are lined along the coastal line and if you prefer you could ask for a boat ride from one of the fishermen in the area. The scenario around this area is just perfect for breathtaking photography.

The best lagoon shrimp and lagoon crab are found here so you better not miss the chance of tasting them from the restaurants nearby.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Go on McCallum Road. Then go on Southern Expressway, Colombo – Galle – Hambantota – Wellawaya Highway and Chadayantalawa Road in Eastern Province. Take Ampilanturai-Veeramunai Road to reach your destination.

From Batticaloa

You have to head south toward Trincomalee Highway. Drive from Colombo – Batticaloa Highway and drive to Manmunai Bridge to reach your destination.
