Laxapana waterfall is situated in Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka. It is located in the Maskeliya town of the Nuwara Eliya district. It is at a height of 126 meters. The distance from Nuwara Eliya to Laxapana waterfall is 70.8 km and it takes 2 hours and 16 minutes.

About the destination

Laxapana waterfall is situated along the Maskeliya-Norton bridge road. The word Laxapana waterfall stands for “Laxa” which means a hundred-thousand in Sinhala and “Pahana” which means lamps. The complete meaning of it is that many lamps could be lighted from the power generated using the water from the waterfall.  

History of the destination

It is believed that Lord Buddha mended his saffron robe in the Laxapana waterfall when visiting Sri Pada. It is the 625th highest waterfall in the world. The traditional name for Laxapana waterfall is Veddha hiti Ella or the waterfall where the Veddhas live.

The track of Laxapana waterfall is quite difficult to hike and you should be careful when bathing in the fall due to the flow rate of the waterfall.

Reaching the destination

From Colombo

Go on McCallum Road. Take Colombo – Katunayake Expressway. Continue on Yakkala – Radawana Road. Follow Avissawella – Hatton – Nuwara Eliya Highway. Drive to Polpitiya – Hangarapitiya Road.

From Nuwaraeliya

Take Avissawella – Hatton – Nuwara Eliya Highway. Continue on Carolina – Norton – Wanarajah Road. Take Norton – Maskeliya Road to Polpitiya – Hangarapitiya Road to reach your destination.
