Description

Maritime and Naval History Museum

Maritime and Naval History Museum is a maritime museum situated in Trincomalee. It was established on 3rd February 2013. It is located close to Fort Fedrick where the Dutch first landed on the island in the late 16th century and started their rule in the country.

About the destination

The museum is situated in Lavender lane. It is home to many several ancient relics that go back in the day where trade relationships were just established in Sri Lanka. It displays the maritime history of Sri Lanka, marine biodiversity, and information on the history of the local naval affairs. This place also provides a good perspective on the history of how the Dutch set a foot into the island.

Why you should visit

You should visit this place because this used to be the official residence of the Dutch Naval Commissioner during the 17th century. Recently, restoration was done by the Government of Sri Lanka which now allows the visitors to reimagine how life would have been like for a high-ranking colonial.

Also, make sure to explore both stories as you will see that the way it is arranged can take you through maritime history in chronological order.
