Description

Nissankalata Mandapa

Nissankalata Mandapa is situated in Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. It is quite a unique structure and it is open on all sides and protects the people who are inside. It is believed that back in the past Mandapas was used as a recitation platform during remembrance ceremonies for the dead.

About the destination

Nissankalata Mandapa was built by King Nissanka Malla and this area consists of the oldest and the most sacred monuments in the city. Its pavilion is surrounded by a wall named the Wickramage and the pavilions consist of eight curvilinear pillars. These pillars are arranged in two rows and four in each row while they are fixed on an elevated stone platform. They are also unique because they are curved like a lotus stalk with a flower as the capital.

History of the destination

There is a portico slab-inscription of Gal Potha and Hetadage which confirms that the building was named as Nissanka Latha Mandapaya. It also states that it was built by King Nissankamalla who ruled from 1187 to 1196 A.D. There are also historical sources that reveal that this place was where King Nissankamalla listened to the chanting of Pirith and worshipped the Tooth Relic.
