The Mahakandura Ella Falls is located in Padiyapelella, Nuwara-Eliya district, Central province of Sri Lanka. The waterfall flows from a height of 120 meters, gets divided into several segments at different directions into the depths of its base pool. During the rainy season, Mahakandura Ella Falls gives an amazing view to the observers as large volume of water spreads over the rocks like a white wedding veil. There is no main river or tribal water from where Mahakandura Ella Falls begins; however, it is served by the water from the Katukelle Estate that is 1200 meters high. Just below the waterfall, there is a canal network that was constructed very long time back in 1888. Mahakandura Ella Falls is located within a charming atmosphere with colorful floras surrounded to add more beauty to the waterfall. The travelers would also observe a large number of endemic fish by the waterfall. There is actually no water pool that could be used by the travelers to have a bath; however, they could cautiously enjoy the refreshing water under the waterfall.
How to reach the Destination:
Mahakandura Ella Falls is located about 43 km from Kandy in Padiyapelella on the Kandy – Rikillagaskada – Walapane road. If the traveler takes the Ragala – Kandy road, he needs to travel for about 42 km, and the waterfall is located between the 25th and 26th mile posts. Distance from Nuwara Eliya is about 40 km. If you are travelling from Nuwara-Eliya, you should take the Nuwara-Eliya – Udapussellawa Road passing Kandapola and Mathurata up to Padiyapelella to reach the Mahakandura Ella Falls in Padiyapelella.
