About Rawan Ella:

The Rawan Ella should not be confused with Rawana Ella. The Rawan Ella is a magnificent waterfall situated in the village of Uduhawara, Badulla district of Uva Province of Sri Lanka. This waterfall is located downside of another waterfall named Bomburu falls.

There are interesting folk stories connected with Rawan Ella. There is a belief that a copper pot filled with gold is buried right under this waterfall in the pool below, and on certain days the pot surfaces. However, this pot has never being recovered by anyone and cannot be touched by anyone. This folklore has probably caused this waterfall to be named Rawan where Ranvan means Golden. Some say, Rawan Ella is also connected with Rama and Ravana stories.

The waterfall is located approximately 12 km away from Welimada. Rawan Ella continuously supplies water to this beautiful village situated in the dry zone, throughout the year. It provides water to support livelihood of villagers to cultivate vegetables and to earn an income. The Rawan Ella is very visible when you head towards this village, and it seems a magic when you notice the surrounding mountains are dry and dirty, whereas this particular waterfall that is about 40 meters in height is greenish and cultivated. Villagers say, they continuously take shift duties in protecting and cultivating around this mountain.

How to reach the Destination:

This water fall is located 37 km from Nuwara Eliya on the Welimada – Perawella road near the Uduwahara temple. Coming from Welimada to Udupussalwa, you should turn at the Ambagasdeva junction and take the Perawella road to the upper end of the Udunavara village.
